Ice cream maestro Domenico Manfredi has been voted the UK’s champion ice cream maker.

The accolade comes as his family firm, Smiths Creamland Ices in Clay Cross, Derbyshire celebrates 60 years in business.

Domenico, 82, runs his manufacturing business with his wife, Louise and three daughters Tina, Lorraine and Gianina.

The family’s dairy and vanilla ice cream won a hat trick of awards at the prestigious National Ice Cream Competition organised by the Ice Cream Alliance – the trade body for the UK’s £1bn ice cream industry.

Domenico said:”Our ice creams have been winning awards for more than 50 years but to judged to be the best in the UK is an unbelievable honour.

“I’ve been making ice cream since 1954 and I have always held true to my principles of using the best natural and local ingredients to produce a great tasting ice cream.

“This year we are celebrating our business’s Silver Jubiliee and there could be no better way to start the celebrations than by becoming national ice cream champion. We are all very excited.”

Domenico’s wife Louise added:” I am so pleased for Domenico. He is so dedicated and still goes to work at 6am every day. Although he talks about retiring I don’t think he ever will – the ice cream business is in his blood!”

Zelica Carr, Chief Executive of The Ice Cream Alliance, said: “We are all delighted for Domenico and his family who have consistently produced high quality ice cream over so many years.

“His ice cream is outstanding and he is a wonderful ambassador for the ice cream industry.”
